SPGC - a small club with a Big Heart

It was in 1993 that Founder Member Arthur Wilkinson decided to hold a "Charity Week-end". In those early days it was a joint event involving both Club and College in an effort to raise money for both College and Club nominated Charities.

Today the event is run by the golf club and takes place on a Friday, usually in May; however the 2015 event is being held on Friday 12th June.

Over the years this event has raised in the region of £90,000 and now averages a clear profit of £6,000 per year which is then distributes to three nominated local charities, each of which receives sponsorship for three years.

Annual Corporate Charity Day

Each year around thirty teams of four enter the event, starting the day with a bacon 'buttie' 18 holes of golf , an evening function which includes dinner, prize giving and an auction.

The teams compete for a number of prizes. Raffle tickets go on sale around mid-April, but the real winners are the three local charities.

A big thank you goes to our loyal Charity Sponsors, Home Gas Supplies, the SPGC Charity Committee members, club members and all those who regularly get involved in making such a difference to people's lives.

2017 New Charities to benefit from SPGC success.

In 2016 the local charities destined to benefit from the generosity of local companies, the golf club members and the charity day sponsors, were:

  • Dogs for Good (first year)

  • Medequip4kids (third and final year)

  • Rainbow House (third and final year)

In 2017 two new charities will be supported to replace those that have come to the end of their terms, these are Dan's Trust and PHAB.
